Multimedia company multimedio is facing a lawsuit claiming that it has been used to steal millions of dollars from people by using a method that lets people bypass copyright and get access to content they otherwise would not have been able to access.
In a statement, the company says that it is working with copyright holders to fight the lawsuit and says that there is no evidence that the software is used to circumvent the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
“Our software is not a ‘troll’ or a ‘scam’, but a technology that allows for users to bypass the Copyright Act to access content that would otherwise not be available, including some of the best-known films and TV shows that are available to anyone in the world,” it said.
“The DMCA requires that any software must not violate the rights of others.”
The company has previously said that it was “looking into ways to resolve” the dispute and that it would be “open to discussions with our copyright holders about the best way forward.”
The lawsuit was filed in California state court by two people who claim they have been charged thousands of dollars for access to copyrighted content.
In the statement, they claim that they have paid the company between $100,000 and $150,000 for the privilege to bypass copyright protection and access their own content.
The lawsuit accuses the company of using a technique that allows a third-party service to “manipulate” the way the software handles content and then “extract” money from the people who purchased the software.
It also says that the process of paying for the right to bypass a copyright and to use it is “almost like a criminal offence”.
“If a third party software service attempts to steal your money, they will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the statement said.
A spokesman for the company told News24 that the company had not been contacted by the court.
It added that “multimedia” software is the term used to refer to software that allows users to run their own websites.
“It’s important to note that the content that is accessed by the software does not have to be in the public domain.
In fact, the content could be copyright protected works.
The software is a means for the software to do its job,” the spokesman said.
